-
- Yipes, I can't resist this. <G> First, not flaming, just want to put
- in an experience I had a long time back. But maybe anyone could have
- done this...
-
- I learned TRS-80 Level II BASIC after 6 months of serious study at my
- parents computer (LOOOONG Time ago!). They bought me two work books
- and made me stick to it, having me do all kinds of programming for
- them from plotter (CGP-115) mail labels for my dad's buisness, to
- screen credits for their outtings and my school chior concert, as well
- as just 'fun' stuff to see if I could really do it. 6 months later, I
- was programmming stuff for others. No, I was not a whiz kid.
-
- It just depends on the type of BASIC you use. I've since went to QB45
- and programmed my own GUI (which went PD and some are using it for
- Hard Drive menu systems and such). I mainly make utilities that are
- useful (label makers, etc.)
-
- I got caught on to Tandy CoCo 3 BASIC in only 10 months (at the time I
- was working and had less time to hack). Basic09 (OS/9 Level II OS) in
- a few months as I by then knew BASIC, so QB45 was easy.
-
- When I was into my Tandy CoCo 3 OS/9 Lev. II system, I had seen some C
- source code, but didn't really understand it too much, but was already
- pretty proficient at OS/9 stuff. I made my own C graphics libraries
- for the CoCo in only 3 days after I bought the Microware C Compiler!
- And I never really programmed in C! Yes, the libraries worked fine. :)
-
- Uh... now how could I have done that? Well, I cheated by reading some
- stuff on it in Rainbow Magazine and knowing OS/9 like I did. I still
- kind of consider it an accomplishment of sorts.
-
- That's why I don't doubt people saying after 8 months they can
- program in BASIC pretty well. Some probably can. Also depends what
- you mean by proficient. I define it as being able to easily hash out
- code to do what you need, without someone else's help. Be it a game,
- utility etc. So, I think a question goes here. Would I be considered a
- "C Programmer" if I can write stuff like a hard drive menu system, or
- a label maker/address database, or a utility to create script files
- and an installation program for installing programs onto HD even
- though I still can't create network applications or a fancy VGA
- DOOM-style game? Just so I don't make a statement in the future about
- myself that may not be accurate. (And hopeing I haven't already with
- BASIC). How much do you have to know to be "Advanced"?
